A few years ago, if your blood pressure was below 140/90, you would have been considered fine. Now, with the new guidelines issued by the National Institutes of Health, if you're above 120/80, you're considered prehypertensive. Prehypertension, or borderline high blood pressure, is one of the risk factors doctors are identifying for heart disease, diabetes and stroke. You need to get your blood pressure checked periodically. Most people who have high blood
pressure didn't know it before they were diagnosed. To prevent high blood pressure, start exercising, don't smoke, cut back on salt, and watch your alcohol intake.
