After you start exercising, it may take 4-6 weeks before the scale starts showing it. You may notice that your clothes are fitting better, but your scale is just not budging. So, what's up? During the first few weeks of exercising, you're building muscle while you are losing body fat. Remember, muscle is much denser than fat, so your scale may not be showing your true results. Usually after 6-8 weeks, muscle gains start slowing down and the scale should start showing your weight loss. To keep from getting discouraged, measure yourself to monitor your progress. Measure your arms, chest, waist, hips and thighs every 4 weeks. As long as you are losing inches and your clothes are fitting better, don't worry so much about what the scale says.

My problem is that I just don't challenge myself enough. I do run, would like to do more weight training as my arms could use that extra 'ummph' when kayaking - but I get just at an acceptable ok, and then I coast.
Self-motivation is not easy...
I find that it helps to have a short term goal to stay motivated such as getting in shape for a special event or rewarding myself with something I really want-- once I lose a few pounds. Hanging out with people who are in great shape is another motivator. It's easy to lower your standards when you are in better shape than other people.
